Our goals are simple: to be AMA’s resource for consumer behavior academics. We provide socials at every AMA conference, often provide a special session on a hot cbtopic, and sometimes sponsor off-site events. For instance, last weekend, we sponsored an off-site dinner at a nice restaurant. We also sponsor a coffee break at each ACR conference, as the CBSIG community is often ACR bound. We also have the CBSIG Quarterly, edited by Linda Tuncay, that goes to members.

We will also be seeking a new officer that will serve as a doctoral student liaison (as ours, Yupin, has graduated and now serves as our international liaison as she is in Thailand).

We may also seek a new officer to add some fresh content to cbsig.org that is relevant to cb-interested doctoral students.

Our leadership team consists of mainly assistant professors, so we are a great resource for emerging scholars.

You may call AMA at 1800 AMA 1150 to add the content SIG of your choice. There are many excellent SIGs, and regardless of which you choose,

Are you interested in emotions?

If so, please come by the CBSIG session “Understanding Emotions in Consumption Experiences: A Cognitive Appraisal Approach” on Saturday at 3:30 (please check the program for room number).

Each day consumers make decisions and form attitudes and thoughts based on the emotions they experience. Bagozzi, Gopinath, and Nyer (1999) stress the consideration of specific emotional states rather than examining general affective states (e.g., positive and negative). Further, they note the importance of identifying antecedents and consequences of these specific emotions in the marketplace (Bagozzi, Gopinath, and Nyer 1999). In particular, cognitive appraisal theory (e.g., Ortony, Clore, and Collins 1988; Roseman, Antoniou, and Jose 1996) provides an appropriate theoretical framework for understanding the conditions that elicit particular emotions. While research in marketing has increasingly used this theoretical perspective, nonetheless, this research has only begun to uncover the important conditions that give rise to the various consumption emotions known to exist (e.g., MacInnis and de Mello 2005; Patrick, Lancellotti, and Hagtvedt 2009; Ruth, Brunel, and Otnes 2002). The purpose of this session is to examine how specific consumption emotions—namely, shame, guilt, hope, and satisfaction—are elicited, how individual difference variables moderate the intensity to which these emotions are felt, and how these emotions influence important consumer outcomes in consumption experiences. Papers are on:

“Gift Shopping and Consumers’ Negative Self-Conscious Emotions”
Barry J. Babin, Louisiana Tech University & Weiling Zhuang, Eastern Kentucky University

“When Norms Are Violated: The Role of Guilt in Relationship Marketing”
Kate R. Pounders, Judith Anne Garretson Folse, William C. Black, Louisiana State University

“The Possibility and Actuality of Getting What You Don’t Want: Impacts on Hope and Satisfaction”
Julie Guidry Moulard, and Judith Anne Garretson Folse, Louisiana State University Michael W. Kroff, Montana State University

Discussion Leader: Julie Ruth, Rutgers, Rutgers University-Camden

Session Chair: Barry J. Babin, Louisiana Tech University

The topic for the 2011 Advertising and Consumer Psychology Conference is environmental sustainability. The conference will look at the consumer psychology of marketing communications on this timely topic. Some subtopics on which papers would be welcome include corporate advertising strategy related to sustainability, corporate social responsibility advertising, greenwashing, advertising related to values, persuasion and persuasion knowledge in sustainability marketing, social media and sustainability, lifestyles, voluntary simplicity, product end-of-life issues, marketing organic foods, and advertising and public policy. The overall goal is to refine and direct what we know about advertising and consumer psychology in relation to sustainability.

Preference will be given to papers describing a long-term program of research, not just a single study (as is true of most academic conferences). A competitive review process will be used for selecting papers. The intent is to achieve genuine dialogue that results from the small size of the conference, the generous allotment of time for each paper, and the mix of participants. We intend to produce an edited book featuring the best papers from the conference.

The conference will be held May 6-7, 2011, at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. Submit extended abstracts (two pages) or full papers (maximum 25 pages) by March 7, 2011 to: Lynn R. Kahle, lkahle@uoregon.edu. Notification of decisions will occur by March 21.

Recession or uncertainty? – While most would argue that the former is a more daunting environment for business and consumerism, a case can be made that the latter poses even greater challenges. Unpredictability and uncertainty over ones employment future, the value of a home, or the wild swings of a tumultuous global economy cannot just reduce but fundamentally change spending patterns and attitudes. With a U.S. stock market that lost over half its value and regained half of that in just a matter of months, marketers are having to rethink and sharpen the value they provide consumers, and squeeze every penny of inefficiency out of their own supply chains. The result of surviving this turbulence should be firms that are even more efficient on a global basis and consumers who may have more intensified brand loyalties than ever before.

The theme of this year’s conference, “Delivering Value in Turbulent Times” is intended to spur thinking on these issues. We need richer theories to help understand how consumers react to not just a depressed economy but to a turbulent and uncertain one. From a managerial perspective, we need to better understand whether fundamental rethinking is needed – Are things like ‘experience marketing’ and ‘small indulgences’ (recently active topics in the field) still viable in this turbulent world, or being replaced by a simple focus on core product and service value? For this conference, we particularly encourage papers which touch on all areas of the marketing mix, consider societal implications, consumer perspectives, services, relationships, international issues, and macro-level analyses of issues related to this turbulent world.

In general, we hope to see you all in San Francisco for the 2011 Summer Educators Conference. It promises to be a stimulating weekend in an exciting environment. Beyond traditional paper submissions, we strongly encourage you to think about interesting special session and panel possibilities for this event. Last, we plan on several unique social events and innovative research forums at the conference making this sure to be a productive and stimulating event for all.
